Details: This coffee is produced by nearly 2,000 members of the Permata Gayo Cooperative in Bener Meriah, Sumatra.
Member farms average fewer than three acres, and approximately 70 percent of the participating producers are
women who rely on coffee income to support their families.
The producers are part of the Gayonese community, where coffee cultivation is closely tied to village life and long-
standing local traditions. Farms are scattered across mountainous terrain, and seasonal rain and rugged roads can
make the movement of coffee especially difficult.
At the farm level, ripe cherries are carefully sorted, depulped and fermented overnight in small micro-mills before
washing. The coffee then follows Sumatra's traditional Giling Basah method: parchment is removed while the beans
retain a higher moisture content, and the exposed coffee is dried on patios. This wet-hulling process contributes to
the beans' distinctive bluish color and classic Indonesian character.
Permata Gayo coordinates local warehouses, transportation, wet hulling, final drying, dry milling and quality control.
By organizing these steps collectively, the cooperative helps farmers overcome logistical barriers, maintain
consistent preparation and reach international markets with greater earning potential.
