The heat is on in more ways than one.
Sales are strong and despite difficult economic times, specialty grade coffee buyers continue to seek out great brands to support with their coffee $s.
Shipping News - so important because shipping is the largest single cost in our business. It represents 29.4%(and going up) of the total cost of your products. Coffee by the way is 27.8%.
On July 9th the USPS put a new price structure into place. The details were not clear and we still don't know what the full impacts will be but the last 10 days it increased the cost to ship by about $0.30/12oz bag. We will continue to evaluate this over the next 2000 orders and get a full impact on shipping costs.
With a looming UPS strike on July 31, we have evaluated our exposure, the impact and options to mitigate if it does occur. We have established a fairly comparable process with Fed Ex so there will be no gap in service but we do project at least a 1 day delivery delay for each week the strike is in effect. The sheer size of the UPS operation and impact on all of the other carriers including USPS means all of us need to be prepared for longer delivery times. Our fulfillment times are ahead of norm, so this will help but if you have an important event, be sure to plan WAY ahead. 4 Weeks out at this point would not be unreasonable. We have contacted all of our cafe's, restaurants and retail and recommended that they increase stock levels to at least 4 weeks. We recommend that you do the same. While it is looking more and more likely to happen, we hope it does not and a little overstock is better than having record demand and no product.
